As the Oldest Free Adult Learning Center in Oklahoma, CLC is Committed to Transforming Lives Through Learning English Conversations
As the oldest free adult learning center in Oklahoma, it is a privilege to offer safe spaces to grow, overcome challenges, and help people achieve their dreams.
Our students come to us because they want more from their lives. They’ve been held back by not being a US citizen, not understanding English, or missing out on higher education opportunities because they never finished high school. We want to empower others and build a legacy of hope for each person who joins our programs.
Here we believe that true change happens when a community comes together. By exploring our volunteer opportunities in Oklahoma, you’re not only giving back, but you’re also investing in a future where every adult has a chance to learn and succeed, no matter which stage of life they’re in. Whether you’re passionate about teaching English language skills, helping someone pass the HiSET, or feeling called to support programs that lift up the Oklahoma City community, your generosity helps us change the lives of people ready for more.
Our Mission Drives Success
in Our Community
We know that when adults learn, they open the door to better chances. Opportunities include: learning to read, growing their careers, being the first in generations to get their High School diploma, or even taking the steps to become a United States citizen. We understand that dreams become bigger when we expand our way of thinking, which is why our vision is to create a ripple effect in learning, hope, and success across generations in Oklahoma County.
Community Literacy Centers was founded in 1987 originally because we noticed that higher incarceration rates were related to lower literacy achievement. We’ve continued our work because we’ve seen the difference that comes with giving adults the chance to learn something new.

Community Literacy Centers students who succeed in their programs are now able to:
- Help their children with their homework
- Make appointments online
- Progress in their career
- Dream bigger for their life
- Create a legacy of learning
- Build self-esteem and independence
Through our efforts, we’ve helped thousands of Oklahoma County residents change the course of their lives through our classes. Learning to read may seem so simple to many of us, but to the people who have spent their lives with low literacy skills, learning to read, or speak English means everything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be a certified teacher to volunteer as a teacher?
No. Volunteers do not need to have a teaching background or certification. All of our classes are taught by certified teachers. If you’re passionate about supporting learning, you can help by assisting our teachers with classroom activities or providing individual attention to those students who require additional help.
Where do volunteer activities take place?
Our volunteer opportunities are flexible to fit the needs of our students (and volunteers!) Some of our classes are held in person at local libraries and community centers throughout the OKC metro area. We also need volunteers for our online classes.
How does volunteering at CLC impact the community?
Volunteering at CLC creates a lasting, positive ripple effect throughout our community. When you volunteer or assist in other ways, you help break down barriers and empower adults to learn and succeed. These opportunities not only improve our student’s lives, but it also strengthens their families and the communities they’re involved in as a whole. Your support helps us build a legacy of hope and progress, giving every adult a chance to reach their full potential and achieve dreams they might have never thought were possible.
Supporting CLC as a Whole
Through volunteering, donations, advocacy, and spreading the word about our work, it allows us to continue our mission and support adults who are ready to take the next steps in their lives. Your generous contributions help us provide essential resources for teaching – including materials for teaching basic literacy and English language skills and tools to help adults obtain their HiSET certification or U.S. Citizenship.
Every donation contributes to helping more people who are ready to change the course of their lives. All support, whether financial, volunteer work, or through advocacy plays a crucial role in preserving the legacy of our free adult learning programs. Together, we can ensure that every adult in Oklahoma has an opportunity to take action, to want more from their lives, and to make generational ripple effects by improving literacy, getting their High School diploma, or taking steps to become a U.S. citizen.
Together we can ensure that every person has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
