Changing Lives Through Learning

Every person deserves a chance to learn and grow. At Community Literacy Centers, we offer free adult literacy classes that provide adults with the opportunity to improve their reading, writing, speaking, and communication skills.

CLC welcomes every student exactly where they are on their journey so they feel welcome to learn English in an English as a Second Language (ESL) class, improve reading and writing skills in an Adult Basic Education (ABE) class, earn their high school diploma in an High School Equivalency (HSE) class, or prepare to take the U.S. citizenship test.

Classes are always free for adult learners; they are designed to help students enhance skills such as reading and language, build confidence, and take steps toward a brighter future.

If I could tell someone else about learning to read, I would tell them that learning to read is a beautiful experience as well as very important. Now that I have learned how to read, my mind goes places my body has never been. If you have children, you can share this beautiful gift with them, now how precious is that? Reading has opened doors for me that were once closed. It can also do the same for you if you are willing to learn.

One day my daughter asked me to help her with her homework. I felt so bad that I couldn’t help with it. I went to bed that night and cried myself to sleep. I felt so bad I could not even help my own kid with her homework. I realized that day I needed to do something to help myself learn how to read, then a friend of mine told me that D.H.S. will help me out with that if I want it. It was the best decision I have ever made. Reading has opened up a lot of new adventures to me. I feel better about myself and have no regrets. Reading is power.

There’s nothing more important than an education and it has taken many years for me to understand that. My life has been full of good and bad. I quit school at a very young age. I went to work and worked hard all my life. I thought that education wasn’t important. But as I got older, I found out how wrong I was. How could I tell my children they had to go to school when I didn’t? With what I’ve learned from CLC I’m able to further my education. Thank you for helping us become all that we can be.
Jeff
I want more out of life and to be able to provide for my kids. Reading has been holding me back. I no longer wanted to be at a fourth grade reading level. It is never too late to learn. Learning is fun and enjoyable. I would like to thank everyone who has donated their time, money, and every teacher who teaches the classes. Thanks for giving adults a second chance in education to learn, improve ourselves, our lives and our children’s lives. I’m very grateful for Community Literacy Centers.

Learn More About Our Classes

I like CLC classes because they give me the opportunity to learn more for me and my kids. There are a lot of things I didn’t know before coming to class, and now I can help my kids with their homework. My kids told me once that they were proud of me because I was going to school to learn like them. That encouraged me to keep going to class. I am very happy that there are centers like CLC that help people like me to be successful in their life.
Brenda
Thank you to the people who donate to the CLC program. I enjoy coming to class to learn to read and spell. Donations from special people have changed my life.
Sheila
I like that CLC classes are teaching me to read and write. It makes me proud of myself because i can get through life better now. I’m glad there are classes like this so that adults can learn how to read and write. It’s a different process than when you were a kid.
Holly
Thanks to all of you for making all of this possible. We can speak, read and write the English language. We know that with it we will be able to reach opportunities and we will have a better life.
Cecilia
I really want to improve my reading so I can help my kids. I couldn’t help my oldest, but it isn’t too late to help my youngest.
